Following its performance in the 170th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Police Force Charity Concert, the Police Choir went on to participate in the renowned "Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod" from July 8 to 13.

This music festival, which started in 1947 to commemorate war efforts, has been set in a small Welsh town and soon became an international event attracting thousands of performers and visitors each year in pursuit of excellence in music and dances, peace and international friendship.

During the festival, the Police Choir made astounding appearances in five concerts with the biggest one being performed in the main Pavilion, earning standing ovation from the 3 000-strong audience. The fascinating showmanship by the Police Choir charmed local media, including the BBC, and made a name for the choir overseas.

The founding chairman of the Police Choir, Mr John Turner, retired Chief Superintendent, was instrumental in helping make the event a reality. The Police Choir is also indebted to the UK & HK Chinese Police Association the Chairman of which, Mr Jimmy Chung, helped members of the Choir settle smoothly into the rigour of heavy travelling and singing schedules during the festival.

"I am very pleased to have made this trip and the Police Choir has certainly fulfilled its duty to uphold the good standing and international image of the Hong Kong Police," said the Choir Conductor, Senior Inspector Andrew Ma.

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has been attracting visits from celebrities, including Queen Elizabeth II and Luciano Pavarotti. This year, over 4 000 performers and 10 000 visitors converged there from around the world. The opening of the event was marked by a grand parade on the first day of the festival. Parade participants donning colourful folk costumes and emblems marched through the picturesque streets and alleys of Llangollen lined with hordes of spectators and media corps.
