Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Mr Andrew Colvin, led a four-member delegation to renew a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Commissioner Lo Wai-chung on June 30. This is the first MOU Mr Lo has signed since taking up office as Commissioner.

One of the five MOUs between the Force and the Australian authorities, the renewed MOU sets out the framework for co-operation between the Force and the AFP in combating cross-jurisdictional crimes and capacity building.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr Lo reiterated the importance of international co-operation in face of the challenges and threats of cross-jurisdictional crimes, especially drugs and human trafficking, cyber crimes and terrorism. 'It is only by working with partners in the law enforcement community, such as the AFP, that we will be able to tackle the threats effectively,' he noted.

Mr Colvin agreed with Mr Lo's views and recognised the long-standing co-operation between the two police forces.  He said, 'This partnership has not only provided both Hong Kong and Australia with significant and mutually beneficial law enforcement opportunities, but also is a proven and excellent example of international co-operation in the fight against transnational organised crime.'

As in June 2015, there are in force 27 MOUs and other agreements with overseas authorities.  The Force will continue to explore new co-operation opportunities and strengthen the existing liaison with its counterparts on the Mainland and overseas.
