Education and publicity on road safety are the Force's ongoing efforts. In the past two months, officers continued to bring road safety messages to different target groups, including school children, elders, professional drivers and cyclists.


T HKI promotes cycling safety


The Road Safety Team (RST) of Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI), Road Safety Council (RSC) and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HKRSP) (Hong Kong and Islands) jointly held a "Cycling Safety Promotion Campaign 2015" in Central on October 3, attracting over 200 participants.


Among the officiating guests were T HKI Superintendent Mak Chui-tong, Chief Inspector Ho Lai-chi from Traffic Headquarters, Commander of HKRSP (Hong Kong and Islands), Dr Cheng Shing-fung, member of Central and Western District Council, Ms Cheng Lai-king, and Chairman of Central and Western Road Safety Campaign Committee, Mr David Tong.


The ceremony saw various promotion activities, including safe cycling sharing session by a former member of the Hong Kong Cycling Team, Mr Kan Koon-hang, as well as cycling performance by the Civil Aid Service Cadet Bicycle Demonstration Team. A local designer, Mr Alan Chong, also displayed a unique bicycle that was re-designed using the parts of an old bus.


T NTS road safety promotions for cyclists and elders


Traffic New Territories South (T NTS) opened the "Wise Ride 2015 Safe Cycling Promotion Campaign" on October 11 in conjunction with HKRSP (NTS). The officiating guests were Deputy District Commander Sha Tin District Angus Pullinger, T NTS Superintendent Ho Ka-fei, Chairman of Hong Kong Police Cycling Club, Mr Chan Chun-fai, HKRSP Shatin District Commander, Mr Lau Tsz-sum, and Principal of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S.C. Gaw Memorial College, Ms Tang Wai-chun.


The event offered a fun-packed programme consisting of rope skipping performance, booth games, pop concert and road safety quiz. On top of these, Mr Tang Wang-yip, former cycling champion of the East Asian Games, and representatives from the Hong Kong Police Cycling Club offered safe cycling knowledge and tips and displayed the latest cycling kits at the venue.


Earlier on August 28, the RST of T NTS kicked off a "Sharp Smart Elderly Pedestrian Safety Promotion Campaign", attracting about 400 elders.


The ceremony disseminated road safety messages with various programmes, including seminar, Cantonese opera, dancing performance by kindergarten children, exemplary pedestrian sharing session and distribution of souvenirs. Following the ceremony, NTS Senior Police Call  (SPC) members distributed fliers in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing, Sha Tin and Lautau.


T NTN road safety messages for elderly and school children


For several days in succession in early September, the RST of Traffic New Territories North (T NTN), together with Police Community Relations Offices (PCROs), rolled out a publicity drive targeting at the safety of school children using school coach services. On several school days, officers headed for boundary control points and schools in the morning to hand out road safety fliers to the children.


School coach drivers and the parents who drive their children to schools were also targets of the publicity drive. The drivers were reminded to stay alert when school children board and alight from school coaches.


In another effort, the RST of T NTN and the Ta Ku Ling Kei Lok Community Association held a road safety seminar for over 200 elders in Ta Ku Ling on August 28. The elders were updated on road safety messages and the causes of traffic accidents and reminded to use road-crossing facilities.


T KW road safety messages for professional drivers


Traffic Kowloon West (T KW), together with representatives from PCRO of Sham Shui Po District, Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB), HKRSP (KW), Sham Shui Po Road Safety Campaign Committee  and SPC, distributed Road Safety leaflets to bus and public light bus drivers in the vicinity of Mei Foo bus terminus to remind them of the importance of "driving attentively" and the pitfalls of drink driving and drug driving. The KMB representatives welcomed this publicity activity for spreading driving safety messages to their drivers.
