The theme of the Journey to Psychological Wellness (A.P.P.L.E.) this year is "Permission to be Human". It means accepting our limitations as a human being and facing negative emotions and challenges in life with courage. The elements of "Permission to be Human" are "Practising Mindfulness", "Showing Compassion" and "Accepting Limitations".

Police Constable (PC) Choy Kim-ping from Kwai Chung Division was once energetic and hardworking. While working hard for his promotion in 2009, he missed the opportunity for promotion due to a sudden bout of cerebral hemorrhage. Though his health condition stabilised after a series of medical treatment, he still suffered from residual epileptic seizures occasionally. Subsequently, Kim-ping was indexed as a Health Impaired Officer. Having missed his chance for promotion, no longer able to pursue an active lifestyle and worried about his illness, he was demoralised.

Appreciating the impermanence of life, Kim-ping gradually picked himself up and cherished health more than he had done before. He made a great effort to quit smoking and drinking. At work, he found meanings and satisfaction while serving "Project New Dawn", in which he handled cases of suspected mental illness and suicidal risk. He devoted himself to providing support to the families involved in the cases, easing the heavy workload of his frontline colleagues. Witnessing the misfortune of the less fortunate folks, Kim-ping accepted his own limitations. Now he believes the saying, "Man proposes, God disposes". With self-compassion, Kim-ping is accepting and accommodating others too.

Apart from regaining confidence at work, Kim-ping has started pursuing different hobbies, like reading, stereo music and appreciating beautiful orchids. He is obviously not bound by his illness, and is engaging in life with passion. While coming to terms with his illness, the support from his family, friends and colleagues is indispensable for him. He will honestly disclose his illness and limitations to his supervisors and colleagues because he considers open communication vital within a team.

Despite unforeseeable seizure attacks and the resulting limitations, Kim-ping has learned a valuable lesson of acceptance, and never gives up his passion of living life to the full.
