Deputy Director 2 of the Police College Dr Cheng Tak-ming was appointed by the Director of the Institute of Criminology of the University of Cambridge and a global leading authority on evidence-based policing, Professor Lawrence Sherman, on July 15 as a Visiting Scholar to the Institute for one year. During this period, Dr Cheng can visit the University to undertake scholarly endeavour on behalf of the Force.


Earlier in May, Dr Cheng was also appointed by the Institute of Criminology of the University of Cambridge as an independent member of its International Advisory Board (IAB) for the prestigious Cambridge Police Executive Programme. The IAB advises the University in running the Master of Studies Programme in Applied Criminology and Police Management. Dr Cheng attended the IAB meeting at the University of Cambridge on  July 11 with other academics and senior police officers from the United Kingdom (UK), other European countries and the United States. Dr Cheng is the first serving Hong Kong police officer who attended the IAB meeting. He took the opportunity to explore possible areas for collaboration with the University.


Between July 11 and 13, Dr Cheng, together with Superintendent Kong Wing-cheung of the Police College, attended the ninth International Conference on Evidence- Based Policing, at which they exchanged views with their counterparts from UK and other countries on how to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of policing through empirical research studies.
