Shatin District (STDIST) conducted a joint exercise, MULTICANE II, with other police units, government departments and organisations at the Sha Tin Racecourse (STRC) on November 5 with a view to enhancing multi-sectoral collaboration in handling a bomb incident.

The exercise simulated a scenario in which the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) reported to the Police that they received an anonymous call about explosives placed at the STRC on a race day. In response Shatin Division (STDIV) and the HKJC arranged the spectators to evacuate while the Police Tactical Unit A Company conducted a sweep of the grandstand. However, the suspicious object exploded during the sweeping operation, and the Fire Services Department sent a few casualties to the hospital.

Divisional Commander of STDIV Stephen Baker said the exercise had bolstered the professionalism of the officers in handling an emergency situation. Also participating in the exercise were the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau, HKJC staff, Junior Police Call leaders and volunteers from St John's Ambulance. Officers from the Operations Wing of the New Territories South Regional Headquarters and STDIST took part as observers.
