The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) conducted the first seminar on Online Intelligence Gathering Techniques at the Police Headquarters on March 30 with an aim to enhancing the capabilities of crime investigators on gathering criminal intelligence on the Internet. About 100 crime investigators from Regional and District Intelligence Units, Crime Investigation Teams and Crime Wing Bureaux attended the seminar.

Superintendent Lam Cheuk-ho from the Intelligence and Support Division of CSTCB said that apart from technology crimes, traditional crimes have also involved the use of the Internet, social media platforms, mobile applications and other new technology. Therefore, frontline officers have to keep abreast of times to master online techniques in the collection of intelligence and the investigation of cases.

Led by Chief Inspector Kwan Chung-yin, the veteran members of the CSTCB Training Team shared with the attendees the structure of the Internet, role of stakeholders, advanced Internet skills and cyber criminal intelligence applications. They also introduced the Internet tools for intelligence filtering, analysis and investigation.

The seminar will be held on a regular basis so as to continuously strengthen the professional competence of officers to collect criminal information on the Internet. CSTCB will also roll out more advanced training courses for officers in a bid to enhance the Force's capability to cope with cyber crime threats.
