To promote road safety amongst senior citizens, the Road Safety Office of Traffic New Territories South (T NTS) held a "Sharp Smart Elderly Pedestrian Safety Campaign 2019" in conjunction with the Road Safety Working Group of the Kwai Tsing District Council and Kwai Chung Central and South Women's Association on January 10 at Kwai Tsing Theatre.

Delivering a welcoming speech at the event, NTS Deputy Regional Commander Kwan Chui-ching said 15 out of the 17 pedestrians killed in traffic accidents in the Region last year were aged 65 or above. This indicated that traffic accidents involving the elderly are of utmost concern. Police aim to raise elderly people's road safety awareness through a variety of promotional and educational campaigns, and take stringent enforcement action against wrongdoers.

Other officiating guests included Senior Superintendent (T NTS) Michael Armstrong, Assistant Divisional Commander (Operations) of Kwai Chung Division Mak Ka-po, Chairman of the Road Safety Working Group of the Kwai Tsing District Council Mr Wong Yiu-chung, Chairman of the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Kwai Tsing District Council Mr Tsui Hiu-kit, member of Kwai Tsing District Fight Crime Committee Mr Yip Cheung-chun, member of Kwai Tsing District Senior Police Call Honorary President Council Mr Wong Pui-yin, Regional Commander of Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (New Territories South) Mr Lee Kar-ki and NTS Road Safety Ambassador Ms Fong Yi-kei.

The event attracted the participation over 1 000 elderly people. It featured a series of activities, including a performance by the Marching Band of Shatin Government Primary School, a premiere of a road safety cartoon, a road safety quiz, a chorus by students of St Paul's College Primary School and service users of Chung Sing Benevolent Society Tan Siu Lin Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, a rap performance by students of Tsing Yi Trade Association Primary School and Andy@3Think, and classical hits by Ms Fong Yi-kei and Mr Cheuk Tat. The activities helped increase the participants' awareness of road safety.
