The 31st World University Games Summer (WUGS) will be held in Chengdu between July and August. The government of Sichuan Province attaches great importance to the security of this mega event that has attracted 10 000 athletics from over 170 countries and regions. To ensure the event can be conducted in an orderly manner, Chengdu Public Security Bureau (PSB) invited the Key Points and Search Division (KPSD) under Operations Wing of the Hong Kong Police Force to provide training in Chengdu. Superintendent of KPSD Ko Chung-ying led 17 KPSD members to Chengdu between May 29 and June 9 to provide for the local police officers a 10-day train-the-trainer programme on search and security screening (SSS).

Trainees of the programme came from various units of Chengdu PSB responsible mainly for counter-terrorism and security screening operations. The contents of the training programme covered basic explosive knowledge, search techniques, application of equipment and security concepts. All trainees had to pass both written and practical examinations, as well as completing a large-scale comprehensive exercise on preventive searching, in order to obtain the professional qualification of SSS Instructor.

At the closing ceremony, Deputy Director of Chengdu PSB Ms Xu Hui said that the training programme would have far-reaching significance to the development of SSS operations for the Chengdu PSB. The programme also started the close partnership in policing work between Chengdu and Hong Kong. Ko Chung-ying expressed that it was a great honour for all the instructors to make an effort for WUGS and contribute to our country.
