Clearing the mess' mess!

Dirty work: Noel Howcroft and the team get set to shovel the 'mess'

Kowloon East Operational Base Officers' Mess members recently demonstrated that new 'Mess Culture' can be healthy and positive.

Mess Committee President Noel Howcroft said the roof garden outside the Officers' Mess on the Base's seventh floor had been removed and dumped recently by contractors renewing waterproofing.

The Committee decided the roof garden should be reinstated and called for mess member volunteers to assist on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Eighteen members turned up to form a labour gang with shovels and wheelbarrows to convey nearly a ton of soil from the Base compound to the rooftop.

"It was quite amusing. It was very apparent that this was the first manual labour that a lot of the guys had ever done but they quickly adapted and actually enjoyed it, despite a few blisters and sore backs. I must thank all our members who pitched in," Mr Howcroft said.

The hard work was followed by an excellent barbecue donated from Mess funds.
