Eagle Eye cuts KW casualties

Traffic accident casualties on Nathan Road dropped 20 per cent in March during Kowloon West Region's successful Operation Eagle Eye.

Casualties for the period fell to 24 from 30 in March last year. The casualty reduction was particularly strong at Nathan Road's blacksite junctions with Argyle Street, and Waterloo, Mong Kok, Jordan and Austin Roads which each saw a fall in casualties by up to half over last March.

Serious injury cases fell from five to three and there were no fatalities recorded during the drive. Passenger and pedestrian injuries dropped from 13 to 10, and 12 to seven respectively.

Acting Superintendent of KW Traffic John Hawksley hailed the operation as a success, however, 2,000 pedestrians and 700 drivers still committed offences despite extensive publicity. They included jaywalkers, red light jumpers and careless drivers.

He said KW recorded 272 accidents involving injuries in March, the second lowest monthly total in the last decade.

"The lowest number was in February last year with 233 cases," Mr Hawksley said.

Although the campaign was over, he stressed tough enforcement action would continue and road users should strictly obey traffic regulations.
