Force tops the bucks in waterfront run

Waterfront runners: Stuart McDouall and Peter Halliday head the Police field on Tsim Sha Tsui's promenade

About 200 staff raised $500,000 in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics competitors at Tsim Sha Tsui on May 14.

The 2.2 kilometre promenade route started outside the Cultural Centre's piazza through the Museum of Art and the Regent Hotel, and on to the Kowloon Shangri-la Hotel and back, raising funds for handicapped athletes.

Chief Justice Andrew Li officiated at the event with Director of Management Services Douglas Lau Yuk-kuen receiving a souvenir on behalf of Force participants.

Runners from the Immigration, Fire Services, Customs and Excise, and Correctional Services Departments, the Independent Commission Against Corruption as well as the Government Flying Service also contributed to the 1,000-plus field.

With torch in hand, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Information Systems) Peter Halliday led the Force team to the finish to secure the half million, again the highest among all participating disciplined forces. Information Systems Wing, Eastern and Yau Tsim Districts were the Force's three top money raisers.

The event garnered a grand total of $880,000 to provide training and scholarships for competitors in the 2001 World Special Olympics Winter Games and 2003 World Special Olympics Summer Games.
