Safety cadets: Officers' kids finish their summer road safety education at Traffic Branch HQ

A troop of officers' children upped their road safety awareness through a workshop held August 5 at Traffic Branch Headquarters.

Some 30 kids, aged five to 10, and their parents braved wet weather to participate in quiz sessions and art competitions, and take in lectures and educational cartoons aboard the Road Safety Bus. They also received toy name badges and certificates of attendance.

One mum said: "This has been one of the best outings of my child's summer vacation. I hope Traffic Branch continues to organise more of this sort of activity which incorporates the right balance of educational and recreational elements for our children."

Road Safety Unit Woman Chief Inspector Josephine Lau said about 200 people died in traffic accidents each year.

"Last year, 217 people lost their lives. The figure is four times higher than the number of lives claimed by violent crimes. Nevertheless, these so-called 'accidents' are actually avoidable, as over 90 per cent have been caused by road users' negligence," she said.
