Laser evidence reaffirmed

The accuracy and effectiveness of laser speed detectors was reaffirmed in a November 23 court case that saw the rejection of a speeder's appeal.

The Court of Appeal upheld the speeding conviction, originally meted out in 1998, in the wake of his August retrial in Sha Tin Court that saw another guilty conviction.

The laser guns were temporarily suspended from service in November last year after some had raised doubts over their accuracy.

They were re-introduced in April after an independent expert from the Physics Department of the University of Science and Technology found them accurate and consistent after vigorous testing. Chief Superintendent (Traffic) William Tang How-kong said the case confirmed not only the accuracy and effectiveness of the devices, but also the propriety of police procedures to operate the equipment.

"With the support of the public and the transport trade, we are pleased to note that the total number of fatal and serious traffic accidents which occurred in the first 10 months of the year were reduced by 3.7 per cent compared with the same period last year.

"The result of the trials has lent much weight to our endeavours to make our roads safer to all road users," Mr Tang said.
