Force swim records sunk!

Nine Police records were smashed as more than 170 competitors took part in the Force Swimming Gala at Shing Mun Valley Swimming Complex on November 17.

The 26 events saw new records in individual categories for both sexes, plus several others in the relays. Security Wing Inspector Chan Sze-tat dominated the men's 100-metre breaststroke (1'19"17) and backstroke (1'17"23), and 200-metre individual medley (2'39"17) to set the new record times. Other records went to Pat Heung Divisional Commander Alan Crowther who took out the 50-metre freestyle veteran category (30"82), and Western District Woman Police Constable Ng Yuk-lin who won the 50-metre women's breaststroke (42"49).

Meanwhile, several relay events also saw new Force records. Security Wing won the men's 4 x 50-metre freestyle (2'02"94) and breaststroke (2'37"94) events, while Hong Kong Island Regional Headquarters took out the open 8 x 50-metre Regional relay (4'11"65) and the open 4 x 50-metre promotion relay (2'08"14).

IP Chan picked up the day's Victor Ludorum crown, while Victrix Ludorum went to Wong Tai Sin District's Woman Inspector Choi Nga-wing.

The Best-Supported Formation Trophy saw an almighty tussle between Eastern District and Marine (Operations) who both brought throngs of barrackers brandishing banners and flags. Eastern supporters dressed as Ômillennium bugs' while Marine fans brought in the dragon boat drums to pound out their support, the latter eventually collecting the prize, presented to Senior Superintendent Marine (OPS) Richard Lau Sik-tim.

Guest of Honour, Commissioner Eddie Hui Ki-on received a hearty cheer and a welcome message on the giant scoreboard when he arrived at the complex. After watching the action and presenting prizes, the CP received a huge gold medal from Police Swimming Club Chairman Tony Ho Tse-tong to commemorate his imminent retirement.

Other senior officers included Hong Kong Island and New Territories South Regional Commanders Eric Leung Chi-bun and Mike Dowie, Assistant Commissioner (Security) John Yuen Ying-lam and New Territories North Deputy Regional Commander Charles Wong Doon-yee.

During the fun and excitement, Police Swimming Club officials were scrutinising swimmers' performances to find top representatives for the Force to compete in the 2001 World Police and Fire Games in the United States.
