Breakthrough youths in the ring

Most may have trouble remembering the details of the infamous Police Officers' Club boxing dinner as early as the day after the event, let alone several months later. But to remind you, it was held primarily to raise money for the procurement of a boxing ring, which was sorely needed by the Breakthrough Boxing Club in Tai Po.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of those who attended the event, the ring was ordered from the United States and arrived in Hong Kong last month. It was now being used every Thursday at Tai Po Headquarters by the Breakthrough officers, to train youths in the Club, which encourages them to keep fit and to stay away from crime.

Senior Inspector David Ng Chit-bun, one of the Breakthrough boxing coaches, said it was important to have a ring that could be easily dismantled. This was to allow other gym users to continue with their own activities in the facility when the boxing was not being held.

The ring featured padded ropes and turnbuckles just like a professional ring, to prevent injuries.

"The classic boxing ring as used in the POC event is a cumbersome, unwieldy affair which takes several hours to set up and is impractical for our Thursday night boxing sessions. So it was necessary to order a specially-designed American ring that takes only 10 minutes to set up or dismantle," SIP Ng said.

"For the first time the lads can now work on their ring craft and boxing skills within the correct dimensions as marked out by a proper ring. It certainly beats the previous arrangement of stringing several badminton nets together!"

The ring has certainly been a big hit with the boys and provides a realistic setting for the weekly sparring matches.
