Beer goggles: A visitor samples the drink driving simulators

Central and Western Districts, along with the District Office, held a road safety carnival in Chater Garden on February 25. The day included displays of a Saxon armoured vehicle, vintage cars and a set of goggles simulating the dangerous effects of alcohol on a driver.

Central and Western District Commanders Mike Francis and Barry Griffin, Traffic Hong Kong Island Superintendent Cheung Man-biu, and District Council Chairman Wu Chor-nam officiated at the event which attracted scores of visitors.

Mr Francis said although the number of traffic accidents causing casualties in the Districts had fallen 9.4 per cent to 1,221 last year, Police would further enhance road safety education and publicity.

  • North Point officers joined Food and Environmental Hygiene Department staff in a rear lane clearance operation on February 15.

    NP Assistant Divisional Commander (Operations) Sin Chi-ming said rear lanes in the area obstructed by illegal structures and rubbish, provided burglars a favourable environment to commit crimes. The clearance operations and publicity activities would be conducted regularly, and patrols would be stepped up.

  • Some 1,000 visitors attended the Tuen Mun Road Safety Town Open Day on February 18. Officiating at the ceremony was New Territories North Superintendent (Traffic) William Au Wai-lam. The day's highlights included a certificate presentation ceremony for some 30 Road Safety Town Assistant Pioneers, a Road Safety Patrol inspection by 200 kindergarten kids and a host of game stalls.

  • More than 60 youngsters aged 11 to 14 took part in the Green Bird in Action Promotion Camp and the Inauguration of Expedition Instructors in Sai Kung, January 28 to 29.

    Organised by the Hong Kong Award for Young People - Police Kowloon West Regional Operating Authority, KW Senior Superintendent (Administration) Colin Thornborrow presented certificates to more than 30 newly qualified expedition instructors.

  • The New Territories South Road Safety Patrol Annual Inspection was held February 10 at Kwai Chung Sports Ground with 14 secondary school teams, 10 primary school teams and one elderly team participating in the ceremony officiated by Sha Tin District Commander Ian Peggs. Participants were encouraged to broaden their social circle, develop leadership skills and build up their confidence by taking part in road safety promotion.
