Knives no match for spirited Kwai Chung team

Professional patrol: Kwai Chung DIV PSU Team Two members with their Commander IP Ng Kee-wah

Team spirit is the catchword for police officers and nobody knows this better than Kwai Chung Division Patrol Sub-unit Team Two who recently had a real taste of it, twice in the same shift.

Around midnight on February 12, a knife-wielding man was reported to be attacking people in a Kwai Shing West Estate flat. A team led by Sergeant Tang Kai-yan, Police Constables Lee Kam-chi, Ng Kin-pong, Yeung Kan-sung and Woman PC Fung Suet-mui rushed to the scene.

PC Yeung said: "We saw a young man attacking his father with the knife while his mother's hands were already hurt."

SGT Tang and PC Yeung immediately subdued and arrested him while WPC Fung helped the injured lady, bringing the situation under control within minutes. PC Yeung accompanied the injured to hospital while the rest of the team continued their beat, patrolling the estate.

Just before dawn, they then saw two suspicious men who fled when they went to stop and question them. The team split into two, with SGT Tang and WPC Fung chasing one man while PCs Ng and Lee went after the other.

Despite being hurt by the suspect, armed with a knife, SGT Tang managed to subdue him with WPC Fung's help. PCs Ng and Lee soon arrested the other one, and investigations revealed the men were triad members who were about to attack an enemy.

PC Lee said: "I was extremely worried at the time as I did not know how badly injured SGT Tang was, and yet I still had to chase after the other suspect really hard."

WPC Fung added: "I think SGT Tang's calmness and leadership were invaluable to our successful handling of the two incidents and we all learned a good lesson."

PSU Two Commander, Inspector Ng Kee-wah, said he was impressed by the officers' good work and attributed it to the team spirit built through close co-operation.
