SGT Tang's courageous career

Safeguard SGT: Tang Kai-yan by Tsing Yi South Bridge

Some things seem to come in threes for Sergeant Tang. With three more years to retirement, he's served the Force for 31 years and has received more than 30 compliments for his courage and professionalism! And with the retirement clock ticking down, SGT Tang is as dedicated and energetic as ever, always eager to pass on his hard-earned experience to subordinates and improve their skills.

With a 26-year-old son in Traffic Kowloon West, SGT Tang said: "As every parent does, I hope he tries his very best to do a good job." He certainly has a model officer for a dad, with his string of good work throughout his career. About eight years ago, SGT Tang was on duty near Tsing Yi South Bridge when the number eight typhoon signal was hoisted. He saw a barge drifting towards the bridge and its crane was about to strike it.

"There were quite a number of vehicles crossing the bridge and I had no time to inform my supervisors. I used my motorcycle as a barrier to stop vehicles in one lane from coming on, then dashed to the other end to stop on-coming vehicles there, including a bus full of passengers." The barge struck the middle of the bridge within minutes and it was SGT Tang's prompt action that prevented a potential disaster.

On another occasion, SGT Tang subdued a mentally ill man in possession of a knife, in a Tsuen Wan estate, and received accolades from the then Medical and Health Department for his bravery.
