Off and away goes Ah-Ki

Ask anyone who has ever worked in Wong Tai Sin Police Station who 'Ah-Ki' is and you will soon learn of a likeable character.

After 33-year's service as a Workman at the station, the loyal veteran was cheered off onto pre-retirement leave on April 25, with a farewell party at the WTS Officers' Mess which also saw District Commander Ian Tyzzer present the 60-year-old with a souvenir plaque (pictured) for his good service, devotion and loyalty.

Singapore born, Chui Yiu-ki immigrated to Hong Kong and applied to become a Police Constable in 1966. However, limited education resulting from his poor upbringing saw his application fail. But this could not dampen his enthusiasm to join the Force and he finally came aboard in the civilian post two years later.

"When I joined, Hong Kong was flooded with riots and I soon found myself assisting a bomb disposal officer at a case in Tung Tau Tsuen, delivering sandbags to the scene.

"I will never forget how dangerous the situation there was as rioters were throwing glass bottles at us!"

With not one day of sick leave taken during his tenure, Ah-Ki loved his job which gave him plenty of satisfaction and opportunity to learn. Always co-operative and willing to take on responsibilities, Ah-Ki gained huge respect from his co-workers.

Station Sergeant Lui Kwok-yiu, his superior for over two years, said Ah-Ki was reliable, diligent and helped a lot with his valuable experience and familiarity with the station, saying: "Every one of us will miss him a lot."

Ah-Ki, a bit of a green thumb, said he would particularly miss all the station's plants he had cared for over the years, especially the mango tree in the carpark planted by him shortly after joining the formation.

He planned to spend his retirement traveling with his wife and doing voluntary work.

"I will take part in various meaningful activities after my retirement as I am a person who just cannot stop," he said.

The OffBeat team hereby wishes him a very happy retirement!
