Shot Police Constables recovering 'miraculously'

"Get well soon": CP Tsang Yam-pui visits PC Lai Chi-wai at QEH to wish him a quick recovery - PC Lai, shot in the shoulder, is getting stronger daily

Dr Andrew Yip offers DCP MAN Dick Lee good news on PC Sze Kwan-ming's condition

Doctors have hailed the two courageous officers shot in Kowloon City on May 22, who were making "miraculous" recoveries.

Police Constables Sze Kwan-ming and Lai Chi-wai were recuperating at Kwong Wah and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals (QEH) respectively, overcoming serious gunshot wounds which could have claimed their lives.

Deputy Commissioner (Management) Dick Lee Ming-kwai and Chief Superintendent (Personnel Services) Jawaid Khan visited the officers on May 30, commending their courage. Speaking with doctors, Mr Lee received excellent news.

"Doctors said they were making very good progress and I am extremely glad to see them recovering so well. Both have shown a high degree of courage and professionalism in this incident, and I wish them a speedy recovery," Mr Lee said.

"I want to thank the Hospital Authority and the staff of the two hospitals for their excellent work in assisting the officers in their recovery."

Shot through the face, PC Sze was now able to speak and walk around. Talking with OffBeat, he asked us to pass on this message: "I wish to say thanks for all of the care and support from my Force colleagues, and for all the letters and good wishes from the public. I miss my colleagues and I am keen to get well soon and get back to work."

Dr Andrew Yip Wai-chun said: "PC Sze is very strong in mind which is critical to a quick recovery. His progress so far has been quite miraculous, considering the amount of injury he received."

Dr Yip's comments were echoed by QEH doctors who said they were confident PC Lai would soon be moved from intensive care to a general ward. Shot through the shoulder, PC Lai could now leave his bed and speak in hushed tones. He told OffBeat: "I would like colleagues to know that I am improving every day and I encourage them to keep up their good work."

Mr Khan said Police Welfare officers were in constant contact with the officers' families to render any assistance needed.

Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui visited the officers immediately after the incident and was briefed by doctors.

Acting Commissioner Douglas Lau Yuk-kuen visted the next day, with Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and Secretary for Security Regina Ip and other senior Government officials.

Mr Tsang returned to speak with the officers on June 1, after his Mainland trip to hold meetings with public security authorities.

Organised Crime and Triad Bureau officers were tracking the four culprits involved in the shooting on Peace Avenue near Waterloo Road. The Kowloon City Division PCs were on anti-burglary duty when they and a Woman PC, stopped the men who were acting suspiciously. The culprits fled after one drew a pistol and fired at the PC pair.

The CP pledged to bring them to justice, and OCTB's investigations were continuing.
