Sympathy for our international colleagues

Following is a letter sent by Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui to the Commissioner of the New York Police Department following the September 11 terrorist attack on Manhattan:

On behalf of the men and women of the Hong Kong Police Force I write to express our sincere condolences for the terrible losses sustained by the New York Police Department during Tuesday's (September 11) tragic events in Manhattan.

Those of us living elsewhere in the world can only attempt to grasp the full horror and scale of the disaster which has been thrust upon you and your officers. However, as you prepare to move forward and overcome the challenges now facing New York I hope that you can draw some comfort from the knowledge that fellow police officers here in Hong Kong not only have the deepest sympathy for the Department at this time but will undoubtedly keep you in their thoughts during the difficult days which lie ahead.

I would be grateful if you could convey the sentiments expressed in this message to the families and colleagues of those officers who have been lost to this dreadful tragedy.

Tsang Yam Pui
Commissioner, Hong Kong Police
