PDAs go on the beat

To further enhance our operational efficiency by making the best use of new technology, knowledge and equipment, Information Systems Wing (ISW) and Service Quality Wing (SQW) have lately engaged in a pilot scheme which enables operational duties to access databases established under the Knowledge Management (KM) system when they are on the street.

Thirteen Personal Data Assistants (PDAs) were provided to OC DVITs, MESUCs and EU officers who have shown interest to take part in the three-month pilot run commencing December 17. Their response and feedback will be of significance to the kind of PDAs to be procured and their subsequent application across the Force.

Intensive preparation work had been done before the pilot scheme was launched. "The PDA project has presented us with many unique technological challenges. A lot of progress has been made and we're now entering a very exciting time in the way the Force delivers information to frontline officers," said Police Constable Mr Chan Wai-keung of E POL Division, who has just completed his Master's Degree in Computer Science.

In fact the painstaking effort of the whole team was highly regarded by Chief Inspector, Mr Mike Holubowskyj, "I'm very proud of the work done by the ITB project team. They all worked extremely hard to solve many of the technical issues that arose from gaining access to Force computer systems from a PDA. They displayed a great deal of creative problem solving and the work they have done here, together with SQW, has the potential to significantly aid frontline Police duties."

One of the stakeholders, Senior Inspector, Mr Kwok Yu-chiu, MESUC SSDIV, was amazed by the new product and believed that it would definitely ease his life particularly when handling death enquiries at site of industrial accidents.

"The success of KM relies much on the knowers' willingness to share what they know and the eagerness of the other side to apply what they have learnt. Your participation will certainly make a difference in our learning organisation," added Chief Inspector Ms Josephine Lau as a final reminder.
