The Training Wing's Training Development Bureau (TDB) has entrusted the Chinese University of Hong Kong Centre for Research & Development of Putonghua Education to conduct the 'State Putonghua Proficiency Test' for Police officers on a trial basis.

Thirty officers of all ranks up to Chief Inspector took the first of these tests. Their papers were then forwarded to the Mainland's State Language & Writing Commission for marking and grading. All 30 officers received certificates. One officer was awarded First Class Lower Grade, two reached Second Class Upper Grade, five reached Second Class Lower Grade, 15 reached Third Class Upper Grade and seven reached Third Class Lower Grade. The results have been recorded in PICS under the 'Skills' column in recognition of their Putonghua proficiency.

All other Police officers who hold a Putonghua Proficiency Certificate issued by the 'State Language & Writing Commission' can have them uploaded to PICS. Simply send a copy of them to TDB by fax for the attention of Ms Ada Cheung at 2553-0416.

Officers with related enquiries may contact TDB Language Training Senior Inspector Ms Sally Chan on telephone 2814-4497 or Ms Ada Cheung on telephone 2814-4250.
