EU KW selects the best

In late May, the Emergency Unit Kowloon West (EU KW) held selection exercises for 56 officers hoping competing for the 15 to 20 vacancies that occur on a quarterly basis. The candidates spent a morning undergoing basic physical assessments followed by an afternoon of mini-exercises, a written questionnaire and an interview chaired by EU KW Chief Inspector, Mr George Lee Kiu-ki, with representatives from each platoon.

The physical assessment was conducted to show the officers' level of determination and effort whilst ensuring that they had a baseline level of fitness. During the mini-exercises, an armed robbery in progress and a bomb incident, the EU KW HQ team, led by Senior Inspector Mr Andy Naylor, looked for those officers with initiative, decision-making ability, leadership traits and common sense. The interview and written questionnaire gave the applicants the opportunity to explain their motivation and interest in joining EU KW and also gave members of EU KW the chance to ask the candidates questions about themselves.

"On a daily basis EU officers must respond to emergency calls and often they are the first unit to be called upon to deal with serious crime scenes and any major disasters. At times they will be employed as a quick reaction force to deal with triad gang assemblies and in supporting other units in raiding drug divans and dealing with public order events," explained Mr Lee. "That means we need officers who are thoroughly professional and have the right physical and mental abilities to deal with the unexpected," he added.

The successful applicants will be offered a place in EU KW after the forthcoming rotation exercise. For other interested applicants, EU KW will be holding another selection process in three months time. Full details will be issued nearer the time.
