The Service Quality Award 2003-04 was launched on April 30 in support of the Commissioner's Management Priority Two to deliver quality service to those we served. It was initiated with the aims of promoting and reinforcing a customer-focused culture of quality service in all police formations and recognising commitment to the promotion of best practices in the workplace. Any initiative that motivates formations to seek continuous improvement in the pursuit of service excellence should be commended.

Assistant Commissioner (Service Quality), Mr Charles Wong Doon-yee, said: "The Service Quality Award has not only established a framework for quality measures through which success can be assessed, but has also provided the challenge for formations to continue to identify and address opportunities that will result in further improvements."

Mr Wong reminded readers that the closing date for written submissions (on a formation, division or unit basis) for the Service Quality Award 2003-04 is July 31. "If you wish to participate and help the Force to recognise excellence, best practices and innovation in our service delivery, please let us have your submission now."

There are two stages in the Award. In Stage One, participating formations / divisions / units submit a description of between 1,000 and 1,500 words (in either English or Chinese) providing information regarding projects or initiatives within the assessment criteria and include examples of results achieved. Participating formations / divisions / units which pass the preliminary assessment at the end of Stage One will be invited to enter the Stage Two Presentations which will be held six weeks after the marking of Stage One submissions. Shortlisted teams then nominate a team of three officers (including one JPO) to give a presentation (in either English or Chinese) of not more than 15 minutes.

In all, eight awards will be presented. The champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will receive cash awards of $12,000, $8,000 and $6,000, respectively. More importantly, winners can showcase their best practices and share their experiences with the rest of the Force.
