New Territories North (NTN) Crime Headquarters has taken the initiative to forge a closer network with Social Welfare Department and different non-governmental organisations for building an educational channel with different sectors of the community on prevention of child abuse.

Upon the invitation of "End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation", NTN Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) Woman Senior Inspector, Ms Kit Tse Tsui-yan, was the guest speaker at two recent seminars entitled "Protect Children from Sexual Abuse", the first of its kind held by the Foundation.

The seminars were targeted at 100 parents and school teachers, who were briefed on Police procedures and the protection offered to child abuse victims. The participants have showed great interest in the topic, and appreciated the Force's serious approach and professionalism in handling child abuse cases.

NTN CAIU Cadre

NTN CAIU takes up 30 per cent of child abuse cases in Hong Kong. To alleviate heavy workload and to better utilise training resources, CAIU formed a Cadre last March to provide support services for child abuse cases.

The Cadre, comprising 36 trained officers in NTN, conducts video recorded interviews with vulnerable witnesses for all non-CAIU child abuse cases in the Region. For the past seven months, the Cadre's overall turnout rate reached an encouraging 50 per cent. As the Cadre is performing a secondary duty, difficulties have been encountered especially when the secondary duty clashed with primary duty. However, thanks to the dedication of the officers concerned, the Cadre has been operating smoothly.

A Cadre member with the highest turnout rate, Castle Peak Division Woman Sergeant Chow Mei-ho said: "It is my pleasure to be a member of the Cadre. For me, the work is a stone for two birds - helping an abused child and applying what I've learnt. Moreover, the skills that I've learned about building relationship are a great help to me in communicating with other people. I enjoy my work very much and hope that other Cadre members will contribute as much as I do."
