Sha Tin District (ST DIST) Training and Staff Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Eliza Hui, has organised a series of courses on hand sign language since last September to improve officers' ability to communicate with persons with hearing and speech impairment.

The courses have been conducted by veteran tutors from the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf. After attending an intermediate course, which ended in March, the officers have become more skilful in communicating with sign language.

After the intermediate course, CIP Hui arranged for the persons to visit Sha Tin Police Station for an insight into police work. A barbecue was also organised to provide another opportunity for officers to communicate with the visitors.

In addition to the sign language courses, CIP Hui has planned a variety of volunteer services to help hearing and speech-impaired persons solve their daily problems and integrate with the community. In view of the encouraging response to the courses, an elementary course has been underway since last month.
