In this episode, I will continue to illustrate with examples about the "AVERAGE", "MAX" and "MIN" functions.

An Example of Using the "AVERAGE" Function

To calculate the average of "Robbery With Pistol Like Object Cases":

1. Select cell D4.

2. Press the "Paste Function" button.

3. Choose "Most Recently Used" in the "Function category" field.

4. Choose "AVERAGE" in the "Function name" field (See the figure below).

5. Press the "OK" button and the "AVERAGE" box will appear.

6. Drag the box to where it does not block the main window screen.

7. Select range D2:D3 in the worksheet. You will then see this newly selected range in the "Number1" field of the box. At the same time, the result of the calculation will also be displayed in the "Formula result" field (See the circled area).

8. Press the "OK" button to close the box and let the calculated result display in cell D4 (See the figure below).

An Example of Using the "MAX" Function

To find out the highest number of case(s) in 2002:

1. Select cell H2.

2. Press the "Paste Function" button.

3. Choose "Most Recently Used" in the "Function category" field.

4. Choose "MAX" in the "Function name" field (See the figure below).

5. Press the "OK" button and drag the "MAX" box to where it does not block the main window screen.

6. Select range B2:F2 in the worksheet. Similarly, the result of the calculation will immediately be displayed in the "Formula result" field (See the circled area).

7. Press the "OK" button to close the box and let the calculated result display in cell H2 (See the figure below).

An Example of Using the "MIN" Function

To find out the lowest number of case(s) in 2003:

1. Select cell i3.

2. Press the "Paste Function" button.

3. Choose "Most Recently Used" in the "Function category" field.

4. Choose "MIN" in the "Function name" field (See the figure below).

5. Press the "OK" button and drag the "MIN" box to where it does not block the main window screen.

6. Select range B3:F3 in the worksheet. You will then find the result of the calculation in the "Formula result" field (See the circled area).

7. Press the "OK" button to close the box and let the calculated result display in cell i3 (See the figure below).

By now, I believe that you have generally mastered the "built-in functions" in Excel. Just put in a little more time and effort, you will be able to apply them in your daily work and greatly enhance your efficiency.

In the next issue, I will talk about how to define the "cell/range name" and its application in formulas in Excel.

"Sharing IT as it applies to your daily life."
