A loving and caring Force

It is a good example of the Police Quartering Division (PQD) and the Welfare Services Group (WSG) going to great lengths to help an officer injured while on duty.

PC Yeung Po-wah, who once lived in Kwong Yuen Estate in Sha Tin, had both of his legs seriously injured in a traffic accident in August last year. As a result he was wheelchair-bound and had to receive continuous rehabilitation treatment.

Having learnt about his plight, PQD and the Force Welfare Officer (FWO) took the initiative to contact PC Yeung to see what assistance could be offered.

As PC Yeung would need to visit Prince of Wales Hospital for follow-up consultations, his family wished that arrangements could be made for him to move to a quarter closer to the hospital and larger in size so that he would not be tired out after the hospital visits and would recover as soon as possible. This would also enable PC Yeung's parents who live in Shatin as well to take care of him.

After finding out PC Yeung's needs, PQD and FWO immediately arranged for staff of the Architectural Services Department (ASD) and PC Yeung's family to visit the police quarters in Jubilee Gardens to identify a suitable unit for PC Yeung. Subsequently he made an application for allocation on special compassionate grounds, and finally chose a quarter in Jubilee Gardens in September last year.

In order to meet PC Yeung's rehabilitation needs, PQD and FWO also made arrangement for him and his family, ASD staff and a physiotherapist to visit the quarter to see what fitting-out works were required for PC Yeung to continue to receive proper care after being discharged from hospital. Apart from altering the doorframe of the quarter to facilitate PC Yeung's wheelchair movement, PQD also replaced the water heater in the kitchen and so on to ensure better home safety.

During PC Yeung's hospitalisation, WSG staff paid regular visits to him and liaised with the Ward Manager to obtain special permission for his wife to stay with him outside normal hospital visiting hours.

WSG also arranged funding for purchase of PC Yeung's wheelchair and Police Welfare Fund grant for his medical expenses. SDG officers had also visited PC Yeung during his hospitalisation.

Finally PC Yeung and his family moved into their new home in November last year. Since then, he has made good progress in therapy and now can walk with the aid of a walking frame.

The Force wishes him a speedy recovery and happy and healthy life!
