The project started two months ago when the club placed collection boxes at POC, PSRC, Force Library and PHQ for a Force-wide appeal for donation of unused English books. Over 450 good quality English language books were received from various anonymous donors and subsequently a two-day book fair was held at PSRC.

Sales of the books and feedback on the project were so encouraging that another book fair was arranged at the Force Library with equally successful results. In all, more than 300 books were sold and $4,500 was raised for PWF.

As well as raising fund for PWF, the club's project aimed at encouraging "recycling" of used English language books and promoting reading of English language books by Force members and their families. The great support by book donors and buyers had certainly contributed to the project's success, for which the club is very grateful.

Meanwhile, the Police English Club has also held a poetry recital competition at PSRC, with nine children competing in the under nine-year-old category and four in the over nine-year-old category. All the participants thoroughly enjoyed the event and competed in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The club has the honour of having Mr Albert Gazeley, a local prominent amateur poet, to act as judge, ably assisted by Mr Stuart McDougall, a retired Senior Superintendent, both volunteering their services and spare time for the recital. The club's Chairman and two members of the Executive Committee were also on hand to show their support for the participants.

The standard of the recitals was so high that Mr Gazeley felt that even a native English speaker would have problems with some of the poems recited. He was impressed with the participants' enthusiasm and proclaimed that everyone was a winner for their efforts and participation.
