Commissioner Tang King-shing attended as a VIP guest a cocktail reception hosted by the India Association of Hong Kong to celebrate the 60th Independence Day of India on August 15. Also present at the function were Yau Tsim District Commander Chung Hung-fung and his key officers.

Other guests included the Consul-General of India, Mr L D Ralte, representatives from the US Consulate, and Executive and Legislative Councillors.

The India Association of Hong Kong was set up in 1948 and currently has about 450 members who are mostly Indian businessmen and professionals.

During the reception, the India Association presented an award to two officers from Yau Tsim District - Station Sergeant Chiu Wing-keung from the District Traffic Team and Sergeant Lai Ming-fat from the Police Community Relations Office for their excellent services and contributions to the community. This was the first time the association had ever offered such award to the Force, attesting to Yau Tsim District's success in promoting communication among different ethnic communities and enlisting the non-ethnic Chinese community's supporting for local policing.

Yau Tsim District has established for long a cordial relationship with the India Association. Its President, Mr M V Ramadasan; Vice President, Mr Nanu Lachman, and Ex-President, Mr Larry Parmanand, all lend full support to local policing and have participated in fight crime publicity activities organised by Yau Tsim District. They are members of the Liaison Meeting with non-ethnic Chinese Leaders which has been regularly held by Yau Tsim District since 2005 to promote communication and understanding with the non-ethnic Chinese community.

After the presentation ceremony, CP congratulated the two officers and said: "Well done. Yau Tsim has been engaging the local community so well!"
