Nostalgic reunion in HK for former Sub-inspectors

Fifty years ago in 1958, 62 Police Sub-inspectors (PSIs) comprising four training courses were receiving training at the former Police Training School in Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen. Fourteen of these officers have arrived in Hong Kong, from their retirement in various parts of the world, for a six-day 50th Year Reunion.

Coming from Indonesia, the UK, Australia, Cyprus, the USA and Canada for this historic reunion are Messrs Keith Lomas, Mike Womersley, Wilson Wu Shiu-cheuk, Eric McCosh, Dave Galloway, Brian Haigh, Paul Dickenson, Tim O'Hare, Jerry Phillips, Ron Smith, Bill Newton, Hugh Ollerenshaw, Rolly Dibbs and Roy Dixon. The other six reunion attendees, Lau To-yee, Ambrose Chan, Gavin Cooper, Geoff Roper, John Dunn and Russ Mason, are still resident in Hong Kong. All had reached senior ranks before their retirement.

Mr Russ Mason, who took up residence in Hong Kong after retirement in 1992, is the driving force for the reunion. He first mooted the idea in early 2005 of a reunion for his own PSI Course, however, eventually opted for a reunion for all those PSIs undergoing training during 1958 in order to make the event more viable and worthwhile.

For this reunion, Russ has secured the blessings and support of Commissioner Tang King-shing and former Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai.

On the morning of the first day of their reunion programme on October 13, the retired members of the Force attended a briefing on the reunion activities by Russ in the Senior Officers' Mess in PHQ. After the briefing, they toured the PHQ Command and Control Centre. In the afternoon, the visitors toured the Police College to see the training facilities there, which are vastly different from those available to them as PSIs. The first day activities concluded with a visit and barbeque at the Peak Station.

The following day, the party toured the Police Tactical Unit Headquarters and watched a demonstration of Drill Tactics, and visited the Border District, the border fence and an old village to see the developments of Shenzhen.

On the evening of Thursday, October 16, the reunion attendees will join members of the Old Comrades Association for a Chinese banquet at the PSRC, Boundary Street. The Police Choir will be in attendance to provide entertainment with their fine singing voices.

On Friday, October 17, the reunion attendees will visit the Police Marine Base at Ma Liu Shui, Sha Tin.

In between these official functions, the party managed to squeeze in some sightseeing at the Stanley Market, the Peak, Tung Chung and Ngong Ping.

The highlights of the reunion will be attendance, on the morning of Saturday, October 18, at a passing-out parade at Police College and a formal dinner in the Senior Officers' Mess, PHQ that same evening.
