Carelinks Helpline provides prompt assistance

Since its inception in July 2005, the Carelinks Cadre has been actively promoting peer support, awareness of mental health, and positive outlook of life among Force members. By taking part in a series of training activities and service programmes, Carelinkers have brushed up their knowledge and skills in offering help. To mark its third anniversary, the Cadre has launched the Carelinks Helpline 9810-0202, which is tailor-made for Force members.

The Carelinks Helpline is a hotline service provided by Carelinkers to promote peer support among Force members and help those in need to cope with their emotional problems and stress. Those taking part in the service have completed a 36-hour "Peer Counselling Training Course" and received relevant training in hotline service. They have also visited various hotline service agencies, such as the Praying Hearts Counselling Centre, Suicide Prevention Services and Caritas Family Crisis Support Centre, to benefit from the experience of their workers.

Prompt service

The Carelinks Helpline service is available to Force members, both regular officers and civilians. While taking phone calls seeking help, the Carelinkers listen with patience and use appropriate skills to help solve callers' problems. If a caller is in need of professional assessment and treatment, the Carelinker will, with the consent of the caller, make referrals.

The Carelinks Helpline strictly abides by the principle of confidentiality, and a caller may choose not to disclose his name and other personal data.

Since July 30 this year, the Carelinks Helpline has been operating from 7 pm to 10 pm every Wednesday. So far, the Carelinkers manning the line have received calls from Force members about their problems, health and family, etc., and their prompt assistance has been greatly appreciated by the callers. A review will be made to see whether service hours can be extended and better arrangements can be made.

On the progress of the Carelinks Helpline service, Carelinks Cadre Chairman Gilbert Wong said: "After the formation of the Carelinks Cadre to promote the culture of care within the Force and to provide peer support, the Carelinks Helpline service is a further practice of caring and sharing by Carelinkers. This is certainly another milestone in the development of the Cadre."
