Over 40 Police Mentors and Mentees from 10 local tertiary institutions visited Wan Chai Police Station on December 2, familiarising themselves with the policing policy, Public Order Event management strategy, facilities and equipment.

Organised by Recruitment Division, Human Resources Branch, the visit was very successful, thanks to the support of Wan Chai District Commander Blake Hancock, his staff, and Police Deputy Head Mentor, Chief Superintendent (CSP) Pauline Ng.

Policing in Wan Chai District "is definitely a big challenge", CSP Hancock told his visitors when he gave a briefing on the crime situation, strategies for managing public order events, and the major activities at Wan Chai's landmarks, such as Happy Valley Racecourse, Golden Bauhinia Square, Hong Kong Stadium and Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. He also spoke of his District's capability to cope with the challenges of major events, such as the WTO Conference in 2005, closure of the Metropark Hotel in the fight against human swine flu scare early this year, and the 2009 East Asian Games.

After CSP Hancock's brief, the Mentors and Mentees toured the Report Room, cells, and Identification Parade Room, and heard briefings given by Administration Support Sub-unit Commander Senior Inspector (SIP) Pau Ka-wai, on the functions of the Report Room, and by Operations Support Sub-unit Commander SIP Tang Kim-man, on the types and functions of the equipment being carried by beat officers and police vehicles.

A highlight of the visit was meeting officers in the Officers' Mess for friendly chats, including some junior inspectors, who shared their working experiences with the Police Mentees and advised them on how to attend the Probationary Inspector selection interview.

After the visit, CSP Ng thanked Mr Hancock, his staff and Recruitment Division for organising a very successful visit for the Mentees. She outlined the career development of a Police Inspector and encouraged the Mentees to hand in their applications. She also reminded those who had applied to get well prepared for the selection interview.

Finally, the Mentees said what they had heard and seen during the visit were very interesting, giving them a better idea of police work, including the challenges of frontline policing.
