A total of 40 Junior Police Call (JPC) members and leaders, as well as 57 JPC school clubs and district councils were commended on March 20 for organising and participating in community services, publicising fight crime messages, and promoting the JPC scheme.

At the Presentation Ceremony of the Hongkong Bank Foundation JPC Awards 2009, they received trophies and cash awards from the Head of Corporate Sustainability Asia Pacific Region of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), Ms Teresa Au, Commissioner Tang King-shing and Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Tsang Wai-hung.

Speaking at the ceremony, Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Ng Ka-sing said the JPC scheme had undergone significant developments over the past 35 years, with numerous youngsters benefitting from training and gaining various exposures. In actively participating in volunteer services and anti-crime and anti-drug activities, they demonstrated a commitment to serving and caring for the community, he noted.

Pointing out that the JPC scheme currently had more than 170,000 members, including over 700 Non-ethnic Chinese, Mr Ng thanked JPC honorary presidents, school principals, teachers and school clubs for their valuable contributions to the success of the scheme.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Ms Au commended JPC members for their creativity and enthusiasm. She noted: "HSBC has been a strong supporter of education, particularly projects that help students gain a holistic development. HSBC is proud to have funded the Junior Police Call Awards Scheme since 1986. We encourage the youth of Hong Kong to serve the community, develop their potentials and enhance their leadership skills."

Organised by the Force with a funding of over $5 million from the Hongkong Bank Foundation for the past 24 years, the JPC Awards Scheme comprises five categories: Best JPC Member, Best JPC Leader/Advanced Leader, Best JPC School Club (Primary School), Best JPC School Club (Secondary School) and Best JPC District Council.

A selection panel made up of representatives from the Force, HSBC and non-government organisations picked the winners from 539 nominated JPC members and 758 school clubs.

Ravishankar Sukhwani from Mong Kok was selected as the Best JPC Member and Lai Kin-wah from Yau Tsim District as the Best JPC Advanced Leader, each presented with a trophy and an $8,000 cash award.
