July 18 was a big day for Traffic Kowloon West (TKW) for launching two projects - Road Safety Ambassador Scheme with the Hong Kong Road Safety Team (HKRST), and Sham Shui Po (SSPO) District Road Safety News with the SSPO District Council and the District Office.

Officiating at the Road Safety Ambassadors Scheme kick-off ceremony were HKRST Commissioner, Dr Lam Chi-kit, and Regional Commander Kowloon West Fan Sik-ming.

An announcement of publication of the SSPO District Road Safety News was also made at the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Fan said that since its inception in 1963, the Hong Kong Road Safety Team had, in partnership with the Force, been playing a very important role in promoting road safety, contributing to a significant drop in the number of road accidents. "The Road Safety Ambassador Scheme is a further step forward and will see more young people and the elderly take part in road safety promotions and other similar initiatives," he noted.

Since 2009, the HKRST has been working closely with TKW in running the Road Safety Ambassador Scheme in KW Region on a trial basis. The HKRST and T KW also plan to extend the scheme elsewhere and apply for ISO 9001 for the scheme.

The Road Safety Ambassadors will take part in road safety seminars and provide volunteer services at schools and other organisations. Younger Ambassadors will participate in the Hong Kong Award for Young People and exchange programmes on the Mainland.

At present, Road Safety Teams from eight secondary schools and elderly centres have joined the scheme and 37 students and 62 senior team members have become Road Safety Ambassadors. Two young Ambassadors will soon leave for Beijing and Inner Mongolia to join exchange programmes.

Sponsored by the SSPO District Council, copies of the SSPO District Road Safety News are being distributed to the public at the District Office, police stations, District Councillors' offices, estate offices, schools and elderly centres for promoting road safety.

SSPO District Councillor, Mr Lam Ka-fai, and T KW Superintendent (SP) Lai Yuk-wah are two key players for the publication.

Whilst Mr Lam is looking forward to improvements in public transport in SSPO, SP Lai is convinced that the news will provide more information on road safety to the local community.
