Under the Police Mentorship Programme, Steve Sung Ka-wai and Fiona Kwai Man-ting worked for the Police College's Research Centre as interns this summer, garnering valuable experiences of the diverse natures of police work.

Steve and Fiona, studying at the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Institute of Education respectively, were assigned with the job of promoting one of the new Knowledge Management initiatives - Storytelling. For this assignment, they conducted altogether three interviews with officers during their eight-week internship. They also collected data, prepared questions, and carried out filming and post-production work.

"It was an unforgettable experience to interview experienced officers. I have never thought of doing that before. Throughout the different stages of the project, from collecting data to interviewing officers, I came to realise the diverse natures of police work. Now I understand more about the important roles the Force is playing in maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability," said Steve.

Fiona pointed out that interviews with officers gave her a better understanding of the Force. "I used to get news of the Force from the media. This summer, however, I had the opportunity to listen to what officers confided through the Storytelling project. During the process, I came to understand the rationale of policing by imagining myself as a police officer. Besides, I've more respect for officers for their dedication to serving the community," she noted.

Steve described his past eight weeks in the Police College as "fulfilling and challenging". He explained: "Compared with other attachment programmes, Storytelling is a demanding and challenging job because the related videos will be uploaded on the Intranet."

Agreeing with Steve, Fiona added: "Working in the Force is totally different from that in the private sector. We were expected to organise the whole project and provide input. That helped us develop our confidence, organisational skills, leadership competency as well as independent and critical thinking."

Steve and Fiona are grateful to Research Centre staff for helping them complete their assignment and have a rewarding internship.
