Seven members of the Police Operating Authority (POA) for the Hong Kong Award for Young People (HKAYP) Scheme were among the 54 winners who were presented with HKAYP Gold Awards by the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, at the Hong Kong University on October 21.

The POA awardees are Ko Cheuk-yin, Lau Siu-chun, Lee Keyne, Lo Chun-kit, Poon Ying-tsz, Wong Lung-tat and Yim Ka-po.

The HKAYP, formerly known as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, was established in Hong Kong in 1961. The scheme is a universal programme about challenge, enterprise, effort and achievement. It fills the gap left by formal education and encourages young people to achieve whole person development through a unique appreciation system recognised by society.

The scheme provides young people with chances of facing different challenges and opportunities to utilise their leisure time in a constructive way, to set and achieve personal goals, and to know more about themselves and their community through experiential learning either in groups or in person.  The scheme offers three levels of award, namely Gold, Silver and Bronze.

The scheme will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2011 with a series of activities commencing from January. One of the highlights will be a Gold Award expedition assessment trip to New Zealand by cycling in August 2011. Serving officers, Recruit Police Constables or Junior Police Call members under 23 years of age are welcome to join the scheme. For more details, contact the POA office at 2860-6279 or browse the website: www.police.gov.hk/hkayp.
