The Police Dog Unit (PDU) was established in 1949. Four German Shepherds as patrol dogs were purchased, and a professional dog trainer was recruited for training police dogs. These patrol dogs were only used in the Border area in New Territories. PDU kennel was located at the New Territories Police Headquarters, Fanling. As a result of the scheme of patrol dogs proved to be successful, the structure and organization of PDU were then made to expand.

In 1956, PDU Headquarters was established at the Pat Heung Police Station, Yuen Long.

In 1964, PDU Headquarters subsequently moved to Ping Shan Police Station when further expansion required additional facilities.

In 1995, PDU Headquarters was relocated to the former British Army barracks in Queen’s Hill Camp, Fanling.

In 2001, PDU Headquarters moved to Provisional Headquarters at Cheung Yip Street, Kowloon Bay.

At the end of 2003, PDU Headquarters was moved into Sha Ling in the North District. The new PDU Headquarters complete with an office block, a medical centre for police dogs, an indoor training area, and an outdoor training pitch. The extensive ground allows all police dogs to undergo the widest possible range of the latest training. With only four police dogs when it first started, the PDU has developed into a mature unit with more than 190 police dogs in active service today.
