Last week, Cammy and I met our friend in the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force (also known as the HKAPF) and he told us many interesting facts about the HKAPF. Johnny (our friend) told us that the HKAPF was first formed way back in 1914! We were surprised because we did not know that this group of volunteers had been around so long.

The HKAPF is made up of many people who give their own time to assist the regular police force. They have many exciting and important duties. For example, Johnny has helped his police friends to: protect foreign headquarters and embassies, guard police stations, man Command and Control Centres, and help out during natural disasters, emergencies and big public events. Wow, I think that being an auxiliary officer means that you are never bored!

The officers of the HKAPF are all well-trained. Each new recruit has studied a tough course at the headquarters. The training course comprises 320 hours spread over 22 to 25 weeks. In addition, each HKAPF recruit must be trained in law, police practices, procedures, police rules, regulations, foot drill, weapons and tactics. Cammy is most interested in learning law and police work. I think I like learning weapons and defence the most!

Joining the HKAPF means that you get to assist regular police a lot. It is a good way to give something back to society and help preserve law and order. If you want to know more about the HKAPF, you may visit http://www.info.gov.hk/police/hkp-home/english/auxpolice/eng/index.htm.
