The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896 - and ever since they have been staged in various cities around the world. Now in the new millennium, the Games are returning to the country of their birth and to the city of their revival.

This year, the Olympic Games will showcase the modern, dynamic energy of Athens as well as the rich history of the event; born in Greece 2,500 years ago, and revived in Athens in 1896.

The competition schedule includes 28 sporting events to be held at 35 venues from 13-29 August 2004. Some of the events will take place in locations that have great historical significance. For instance, the shot put event will be held in the Stadium of Ancient Olympia while archery will take place in the Panathinaiko marble stadium where the first modern Olympic Games took place.

Furthermore, the marathon route will retrace the steps taken by Phidippides and Spyros Louis. According to Greek legend, Phidippides was a herald who ran 26 miles from the city of Marathon to Athens to announce their victory against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. As for Spyros Louis, he was the first individual to win the marathon event at the revived Olympic Games of 1896.

These are just a few fascinating stories that serve as backdrop for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. No doubt you will discover more for yourself while you enjoy the exciting sporting events that will take place this summer.
