Kickboxing is a relatively new sport. It was first developed in Japan in the 1950s, but has since gained popularity around the world. Kickboxing uses a combination of punches, similar to traditional boxing, and martial arts kicks. Although kickboxing originated in Japan, it was modelled on a Thai martial art, Muay Thai. Muay Thai is an ancient form of fighting used to train Thai soldiers in unarmed combat. There is a legend of a Thai warrior, Nai Khanom Tom, who was captured by the ruler of Burma and forced to fight against ten opponents in succession. Using his Muay Thai skills, Nai defeated all who fought against him. The Burmese king was so impressed that he set Nai free. Modern kickboxing combines the fighting style of Muay Thai with other martial arts such as karate. Competitions are held all over the world, where people wearing protective clothing fight against each other. Points are awarded for successful strikes or knock-outs. However, you do not need to fight! Many people practise kickboxing simply to keep fit. Kickboxing is seen as a good all-round exercise, as it increases strength, helps to lose weight, and combines aerobic and anaerobic training. It is also well known for improving one's self-esteem and confidence.
