Unlocked Secrets

The scenic mountain peaks of the Himalayas are one of Nepal's most popular attractions. Numerous people have hiked through the mountain range, with a few attempting to reach the summit of the world's tallest mountain, Mount Everest. However, the mountain region of the Himalayas also holds one of the world's oldest and most popular myths - the Yeti.

The Yeti is commonly reported to be a large, hairy, ape-like creature walking upright on two legs much like a man, which helps to popularise its other name, 'The Abominable Snowman'. The Yeti is also often referred to a similar mythical creature the Sasquatch, which is reported to be sighted in the forests of North America.

Reports from people claiming to have seen the Yeti have been widespread throughout the years, with reports as early as the nineteenth century. Sightings and reports throughout the twentieth century became more frequent as climbing expeditions to the region became more common, with expedition members documenting coming across large footprints and taking samples of unusual hair specimens.

The scientific community still largely regards the Yeti as a myth, having had no decisive evidence proving its existence, and citing evidence or footprints that have previously been presented as more likely to have come from the area's natural wildlife such as primates, ruminants or bears.

Whether we eventually find out what the Yeti really is or if it really exists remains to be seen. What is for sure is that until then, the legend of the mythical Yeti will continue to catch people's imagination.
