Traffic officers are far from just being pre-occupied with handing out penalty tickets. On spotting efforts by the community to maintain road safety, the officers readily offer praise and recognition.

Whilst on patrol in Western District earlier this month, Superintendent (SP) JG Wan of Enforcement and Control Section of Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI) saw a construction site Traffic Control Operator, Mr Sarki Purnakumar, a Nepalese, acting properly on the busy Des Vouex Road West in directing large goods vehicles to enter and leave a construction site, with due regard to the safety of the pedestrians.

SP Wan was so impressed with the operator's performance that he wrote a letter of compliment to him. SP Wan also informed the Chairperson of the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Central and Western District Council, Ms Cheng Lai-king, and MTR Corporation's Construction Manager, Mr Calvery Ashley, of the operator's good work and suggested nominating him for the Occupational Safety and Health Council's Outstanding Occupational Safety and Health Employees Scheme.

Pleased with the recognition, Mr Purnakumar said: "I was just doing what I've to do." In response, SP Wan said: "Partners like Mr Purnakumar do make a difference to road safety.

"Traffic officers can't be everywhere and they really need the partners engaged in road works and at construction sites to ensure safety and smooth traffic on the roads."
