The Force-wide pilot "Project Gemstone" organised by Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) has proven its worth in the first year of operation, with two Gemstone students undergoing recruit police constable training at Police College, as well as two Gemstone members working as Police Community Liaison Assistant.

To celebrate the project's 1st Anniversary, a reception was organised on March 15 at YTDIST Regional Headquarters. On hand to support the event were YTDIST Commander Yu Tat-chung, Deputy Commander Siu Kit-hung, Police Community Relations Officer M M Khan, YTDIST Police volunteers and members of the Junior Police Call (JPC) Honorary Presidents Council.

"Project Gemstone" commenced in February last year, with JPC YTDIST conducting language training and related activities for Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) youths interested in joining the Force or government service. Every Saturday, a professional teacher conducts tutorial classes for NEC JPC members to improve their proficiency of Chinese language. At the same time, YTDIST Police volunteers guide the NEC students as mentors and organise activities to equip them with better skills and broaden their horizons, like group discussion, role-play and visits to police units.
