Yuen Long District (YLDIST) rolled out "Project HIMALAYA" last year in a bid to raise the interest of Non-Ethnic Chinese (NEC) Junior Police Call members in joining the Force. The project offers weekly Chinese classes and a Mentorship Programme to enhance the mentees' Chinese language proficiency and to boost their confidence in joining the Force.

Through visits to police units and participation in anti-crime and road safety publicity campaigns, the mentees broadened their horizons and gained more knowledge about police work.

On April 30, YLDIST Deputy District Commander Kerry Carew presented certificates to 30 mentees who have completed the 26-week programme. The mentees have made progress in aspects of discipline, self-confidence, police knowledge and Chinese language proficiency. Encouraged by this initial success, YLDIST will maintain the momentum of the project by offering more classes in the second half of 2014.
