With a view to strengthening community engagement, New Territories North (NTN) Regional Commander Chung Siu-yeung discussed crime prevention initiatives with District Fight Crime Committee (DFCC) chairmen and members on October 6. Both parties also exchanged views on the crimes in NTN Region, including telephone deception, miscellaneous theft and youth crimes.

A NTN project known as MESHCUTTER, which focuses on prevention of technology crime, was introduced at the meeting, mainly covering its community engagement and promotion strategies.
The DFCC chairmen and members offered valuable suggestions, including those on the ways to enhance community participation in crime prevention. The meeting not only reinforced NTN's partnership with DFCC, but also broadened the community networks. NTN Region will continue to enlist public support for fighting crime together.

In another development, NTN Region ran "Operation MEGASTRENGTH" during the summer holiday for the fourth year in a row, and a closing ceremony was held on September 25. Mr Chung officiated at the ceremony before a large gathering of guests, including chairmen and members of DFCC, chairmen of associations of heads of secondary and primary schools, school heads and teachers, and representatives from Non-government Organisations (NGOs).

This year's "Operation MEGASTRENGTH" adopted the slogan of "Growing up and join together to fight crime", and organised talks for schools and other activities with Police Districts and NGOs. During the operation, police presence was enhanced in places frequented by youths during lunch time and after school, in a bid to help young people develop a right attitude towards drugs and crime.

During the summer holiday this year, the number of youngsters arrested in cases involving violence, drugs and serious crime in NTN Region dropped by 17 per cent compared with last year. This is a very encouraging result for NTN.
