Eastern District (EDIST) teamed up with Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) groups to hold a Police Community Carnival cum Basketball Competition at the Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College, Chai Wan, on May 22. This provided a platform for officers, NEC, students and parents to get to know more about each other.

The carnival featured Indonesian traditional dance, Filipino and local band shows, police dogs performance, and 18 booths set up by various police units and non-governmental organisations. The basketball competition was held among the Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College, EDIST, the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force (HKAPF) and Blue Hawk basketball teams, with HKAPF capturing the champion.

Among the officiating guests at the opening ceremony were EDIST Commander Graham Mitchelmore; the Chairman of Eastern District Council, Mr Wong Kin-pan; the Vice-chairman of the Eastern Junior Police Call Honorary President Council, Mr Kong Tsz-wing; the Chairman of Eastern District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Leung Chi-kong; Principal of Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College, Ms Zareenah Ho; Imam of Chai Wan Mosque, Mr Tufail; Senior Liaison Officer (Eastern) of Home Affairs Department Mr Eddie Lau; and Chief Superintendent (Auxiliary) of Kowloon East To Ming-yin.

On the other hand, EDIST arranged an inter-departmental meeting with NEC community leaders on May 26 to discuss their matters of concern. Chaired by EDIST Acting Commander Ip Chi-keung, over 11 stakeholders attended the meeting. They included representatives of the Chai Wan Mosque, NEC leaders, school principals, staff of the Home Affairs Department and members of the Equal Opportunities Commission.

During the meeting, officers briefed the participants on crime figures and trends. Police Community Relations Officer Ku Siu-fai introduced an initiative for engaging the NEC community – EDIST Diversity Programme. The NEC leaders appreciated EDIST's efforts in providing a discussion platform for the stakeholders.
