A total of 58 police children were awarded scholarships by the Police Children's Education Trust and the Police Education and Welfare Trust for 2015/16. The Scholarship Presentation Ceremony took place at the Police Headquarters on August 26, with Commissioner Lo Wai-chung, Chairman of the Joint Management Committee of the trusts Mr Lee Tze-hau and Chairman of the Joint Investment Advisory Board of the trusts Mr Tsang Kwong-wing as officiating guests. The two Chairmen also presented certificates to the awardees.

Since the establishment of the two education trusts 49 years ago, they have provided subsidies for many police children with an aim to motivating them to study hard and contribute to society. This year, the trusts gave out over five million dollars in scholarships, bursaries and grants to the awardees.

Addressing the audience at the ceremony, Mr Lo said that the trusts had been optimising the use of donations over the years with the guidance and assistance in trusts management and investment, given by the Chairmen and members of the Joint Management Committee and the Joint Investment Advisory Board. He also thanked the generous donors, adding that their donations showed their recognition of the trusts' commitment to educating the next generation as well as the community's support for the Force. Mr Lo appealed to the awardees to contribute back to the trusts after their studies for the benefit of more police children.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lee congratulated the awardees and urged them to bear in mind their parents' love and care. He hoped that the students would develop analytical and critical thinking abilities, and pursue lifelong learning to meet challenges ahead.

A student representative, Mr Siu Tsz-chun, thanked donors for their benevolence and assistance, which encouraged them to learn hard and strive for their goals.

Two former recipients, Dr Ko Chun-hung and Miss Chan Pui-yi, also shared their experience. Dr Ko, son of retired Sergeant Ko Kam-tim, recalled his happy childhood as a police child, while Miss Chan, daughter of the late Inspector Chan Sze-ki, thanked the Force and the two Chairmen for the scholarship granted to her by the Police Education and Welfare Trust two years ago, giving her encouragement to study hard in times of family difficulties.
